South Australia’s autism reforms began as an election platform, a panellist said

The story

At the 2024 Autistic Pride Day Symposium in Melbourne, on 8 June 2024, a participant asked what autistic led entrepreneurs could do to make sure their state heard them and acted on its autism plans. A panellist answered with South Australia, beginning with an apology for sounding like a promotion for its government. The panellist said they were not politically aligned at all, and noted they were not even wearing red, before giving the advice. “I would say keep an eye on South Australia because they’re putting supports in every school.”

The panellist described what was happening. A couple of South Australia’s universities, the panellist said, were training the educators coming through, and there was a great deal happening in the school system as part of the work of the Office for Autism. Earlier in the session a panellist speaking as a South Australian had said the Office was headed by autistic people, sat in the Department of Premier and Cabinet, and was waiting for the results of its first grant round.
