For too long, Autistic individuals have felt pressure to camouflage their authentic Autistic traits and behaviours – suppressing natural stimming, masking special interests, and altering communication styles. On this Autistic Pride Day, June 18th, 2024 and everyday we’re inviting the entire Autism community to join us in Taking Off the Mask.
The 2024 theme celebrates unmasking our true, unashamed, unapologetically Autistic selves. It’s about openly embracing the traits and expressions that make us uniquely neurodivergent, without forcing behaviours to fit neurotypical norms and expectations.
Whether that means stimming freely, talking about restricted interests, or simply being comfortable in your own natural communication style – we want you to take pride in your unmasked autistic identity.
We are thrilled to unveil the development of a new digital toolkit, inspired by the 2024 theme, designed to celebrate Autism on a global scale. This toolkit, free for all, is scheduled for launch in mid-April 2025.
Share Your #Unmasked Autistic Pride
As part of our effort to amplify Autistic voices and stories for Autistic Pride Day 2024, we invite you to join our “Taking Off the Mask” campaign by submitting a video or picture for a chance to be featured on our social media platforms.
How to Participate:
- Create Your Submission: Capture a short video (no longer than 1 minute) or take a picture that reflects what “Taking Off the Mask” means to you. This could involve sharing your journey towards embracing your authentic, Autistic self, showcasing your talents, or expressing your identity through artwork, poetry, or a personal statement.
- Submit: Email your video or picture to autisticpride@justgold.net or upload here by April 30th. Include your name in the email and/or file name, and tag your submission with #TakingOffTheMask and #AutisticPrideDay in either the subject line or the description. Your submission indicates consent for us to feature it on our platforms.
- Get Creative: We encourage a wide range of expressions, from selfie messages and poetry readings to artwork displays. Show the world your proud, unmasked self in any form that resonates with you.
Incentives and Features:
- Exclusive Rewards: The top 10 video submissions will each win an exclusive Autistic Pride t-shirt. We’re giving away two t-shirts weekly, so don’t delay!
- Visibility: Selected submissions will be highlighted across our social media channels and website, offering a platform to celebrate and spread awareness of genuine Autistic voices and experiences.
